Public Hearing To Approve A Water Well Permit

On May 26, the Sutton County Underground Water District held a public hearing to determine if an well drilling application by Curtis Lipham should be approved.  He had filed a permit to drill a water well on less than 10 acres west of Sonora.  All water wells drilled on less than 10 acres must be permitted.  Due to the size of his acreage, the well could not be drilled with the required spacing.  All of the citizens who owned property within one mile of the proposed well were invited to share any concerns about the proposed well.  During the meeting, it was determined that the planned production from the well was within the water district guidelines.  Some landowners were concerned about the possible chemical contamination from the well.  Mr. Lipham explained the nature of his chemicals, and that there was little danger of contamination.  The board approved the application with the stipulation that a meter be installed and semi-annual water usage reports be submitted.  Also, the board had the right to review the use of the well every three years.
